Tips for Managing Dental Anxiety in Kids

When a child is nervous about visiting the dentist, it can make it difficult for both parent and child. But, if dentist visits are started early in life, many kids will grow accustomed to the sights, sounds, and smells of the dentist’s office. Here are some helpful tips for managing dental anxiety in kids.

Tips for Managing Dental Anxiety in Kids

  • Start dental visits while they’re young

Visiting a dentist at a young age will help give children a positive outlook on visiting the dentist. They’ll also get used to sitting in a chair, having their teeth cleaned, and having X-rays taken. This will allow them to feel more relaxed and comfortable when it comes time for their first visit with us!

Typically, we recommend that parents start bringing their children to see us when the child is around one year old or when the first teeth erupt from the gums. Starting early allows the child to get used to being at the dental office and makes them feel comfortable being there. It also gives the child a chance to get used to sitting in a chair and having their teeth and gums examined by the dentist. And they’ll get used to having their teeth cleaned and getting fluoride treatments too. All of this helps put the child at ease. We always recommend scheduling regular appointments for your child every six months, or so so they get into the habit of coming to see us regularly.

  • Take a comforting item to the dentist appointment

Bringing something along that your child enjoys and is familiar with will help them feel more at ease while they’re at the dentist’s office. Try bringing a favorite toy, stuffed animal, blanket, or even a pillow if your child feels more comfortable lying down during treatments.

If your child needs to undergo an invasive treatment such as a filling or other procedure, try taking your child for ice cream or another favorite treat afterward to help them feel better.

  • Read stories or play games involving dentist visits

Stories and games are great for helping children feel comfortable about visiting their pediatric dentists and should be utilized as often as possible. When possible, try to include your child’s siblings in the story or game as well, so the child doesn’t feel like the center of attention. Your child is sure to have a more positive experience as a result.

  • Teach kids the importance of great oral health

Children learn by example. If you want them to understand the importance of great oral health in their early years, then you yourself need to demonstrate that importance. Brushing and flossing daily is the best way to show your kids that dental health is important. You can also show them that you value your dental care by making and keeping regular appointments with your dentist. Finally, make sure you’re setting the right tone at home when it comes to caring for your teeth, teeth, and gums. If your children see you brushing and flossing every night before bed, then they’ll be more likely to do it as well. The same goes for visiting a dentist regularly. If they see you making and keeping your dental appointments, they’ll understand that doing so is important.
